What are contemporary collectibles?

Hi all. One thing I have always wanted to do was to buy my rugs in rug producing collectors. A romantic thought, I admit: a rug bought in SA, the US or UK is no different to one bought in the home or town of its (the rugs) maker. However, as a SALON contributor remarked elsewhere, the best rugs come with memories that make one smile. Clearly there is very little chance of sourcing antique material in Central Asia today. But are there other collectibles that can be found. Perhaps even which are being woven or spun today?
