People are making predictions in the form of educated guesses, not predictions made with real confidence.
The preferences for antique rugs has several bases. One important one is that the not-very-good antique rugs have all almost turned into rags by now, so on the average the ones that are available are pretty good. The awful new ones are still with us, of course, so the average level of quality is lower. And, of course, aesthetics is only one of the reasons that collectors collect what they do.
