As far as I've learned, some important criteria for the rugs are their design&motifs, colors, materials etc. I've been thinking since I begun to interest in handwoven rugs about "there must be somethings different than painting and machine made rugs which are closest objects to hand made rugs. The Design, Color, Material (wool, silk, cotton so on) (DCM) were not the things what makes the hand made rugs differ from the paintings and the machine mades. D and C can be very well viewed on a web page by means of higher technologies. However they won't be perfectly viewed. And the less, but not much less (even we don't rub the rugs on the webs), performance in the view of M differences on the web.
I finally find out another thing. The rugs SMELL too. I think the main disadvantage of web according to a rug lover one who has not good feeling about the rugs on the webs is that lack of smell. What are the sources of smelling? I don't know. Vegetal dyes? Sweats of hands due to efforts? The reflections of stories behind them into our feelings? Time?
Anyways.. When the rugs smell on the webs, even Steve will buy via internet.
