Seems to me that we talk about rugs at a number of levels and with a number of aims.
One is aesthetics. I think this is the primary element for most of us. At least for me, the others would be of little interest without this as a basis. I really don't want to know about ugly rugs, especially if it takes effort.
Then there's attributions, geographic and temporal. That's one of the major foci in this Salon, of course.
A third is, more or less, the history of designs and motifs on rugs. It's not exactly aesthetics nor is it exactly attribution, although neither is irrelevant to it. If I understand things right, this aspect is the answer to John's question.
