A Stretch on Aesthetics?

Dear Friends,

While I know very little about Turkmen weavings, looking at the design of the Tekke juval conjured up some similarities of the Kazak Karachopf Medallian. The shapes are similar and the 2-1-2 pattern of the Kazak, related to the Turkish large Holbein pattern, could have been adopted in the Tekke piece.

I have also seen similar borders in Kazak and Turkmen weavings, in particular the kotchak (ram's horn) small motiff which has been stylized to look like a double (inverted) block "T".

Am I reaching in these analogies?

Irwin
