: Dear Yon,

: What an interesting observation. Have you looked into this beyond your own collection? If not, it would probably be fairly easy to examine several hundred Turkmen bags in a fairly short time in New York, and determine whether this is a general phenomenon, whether it is related to any particular set of dates, tribe, etc.

Steve, I have looked at some books that contain structural analyses, but neither Tsareva nor Mackie and Thompson give the weave direction. Vanishing Jewels has a ratio of about 2:1 in favor of bottom first, which is similar to my ratio (correction: I had included ensis in my count. After subtracting these out, my bottom-first percentage is 68, not 72).

Regards, Yon
