Dear Friends,
In the post to which this is a followup I erroneously said that Christine Close argued for a dragon carpet ancestry to Chelaberd rugs. In fact, she does not, but argues that the genealogy is 17th c. Persian vase carpet, 17th/118th c. Caucasian vase carpet, 18th c. Caucasian blossom carpet, 19th c. Chelaberd.
At least since Schurmann (1965), nearly all authors have regarded Chelaberds as dragon rug descendants. Christine Close's article (GHEREH, #14, p. 17, 1997) is partly available on the GHEREH web site (www.ghereh.com). Her case for the large blossom carpet being the immediate predecessor of the Chelaberd seems unassailable to me. The rest is plausible but not compelling.
I apologize for the misinformation that was in my previous post.
