  • Machine made cotton question

When was machine made cotton first available in general, and approximately when was it introduced to / picked up by the rug making world?

Thanks for any input (and Merry Christmas!).

    Hi Phil,

That's not something that would be very helpful from a dating perspective. The spinning wheel has been around for more than a thousand years. Modern industrial scale spinning mills came about in the 1700's. Each can deliver a consistent product, Wheel-spun cotton and wool was used in urban workshop rugs a long time ago.

A tangential but maybe more diagnostic issue is, are you looking at hand spun cotton - done with a drop spindle - as opposed to machine spun. It doesn't speak so much to age as is does the living environment of the weaver.

And feel free to post an image and greeting in the annual holiday thread as well, if you like.

    Regards
    Chuck

Thanks Chuck. I wasn't trying to date a particular rug though, just get an idea when certain regions may have picked up machine made cotton in their production. And by 'machine made' in am referring to the industrial scale milled cotton you mention. I saw a good photo online somewhere that purportedly showed a comparison between ends of a rug, one with machine made cotton and the other hand spun, I'll see if I can find it and post.
