Asmalyk help needed

I am having a difficult time trying to figure out dates (defined by a general time period) on Asmalyks and figuring out old from new. I know there are a lot of factors involved with this and I tend to try to look at the designs and motifs but it’s still difficult. Sometimes the newer ones are easily identified but at times those too can be difficult.

Are there any good clues or tips on what to look for? Just when I think I have a good understanding of a piece that I feel is newer, I find a similar one in a book that is 150 years old. I am getting confused.
