  • Demise of Filiberto Boncompagni

    Greetings,

It is with great sadness that we must notify you of the untimely death of our Co-manager, Moderator, and dear friend Filiberto Boncompagni. He passed away on 2 June 2022 in Cyprus as the result of an unforeseen heart attack, and was interred in Nicosia on Saturday 4 June. Notifications were sent to us by his family, and we wish them strength and solace while coping with his loss. His dry sense of humor and broad knowledge of art and weavings, particularly Caucasian pieces, will be greatly missed. Riposare in pace, Filiberto

Yikes! Filiberto was always a steady-as-she-goes, eyes on the road, extremely helpful friend and fellow rug adventurer. I enjoyed his tales of combing through piles of rugs at the markets of Jordan, where he lived before moving to Cyprus. Travelers on their way to Mecca for the Hajj would stop over and some would bring rugs to sell. Ready at the drop of a fez to help with software problems and a neutral sounding board for rug questions and personality issues. You will be missed, Filiberto.

I just posted some remarks about the wonderful Mr. Filiberto, but recalling that I clicked the box for Turkotek to remember me, I neglected to log in. Filiberto would have been miffed. You will probably find my post some time in the future when a moderator gets around to vetting it!

I remember Filiberto from 2012 or so, he appeared to me as a kind, elegant, good mannered presence. And he had this aristocratic sounding name... He also had a fondness for Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines.
I then stopped postings on this forum because I decided it was time that I travel the world. Which I kind of did for the next ten years. A couple of weeks ago I decided I want to reconnect with Turkotek. All is well - I told to myself once I reassuringly saw the names of the likes of Filiberto firmly tied to this forum. How could I have known that he was discreetly but determinedly on his way out? It just shows how frail and precarious this life is.
          Rest in peace dear chap!

                Hello to all of you,

                I'm Alessandro Boncompagni, Filiberto's son.
Yesterday, September 14th, was his birthday. He would have turned 70... Perhaps dying at 69 sounds cooler

                I miss his dark humour.

                  Hi Alessandro

I miss him, too. He was a wonderful person to have as a friend.

                    Dear Turkotek friends,

I somehow missed this sad announcement in the maelstrom of the past several months.

My deepest condolences to all of his family, and those who were close friends.

Over the past two decades, I have learned much about rugs from his direct feedback on this forum, and from others that he connected though his support of Turkotek.

I feel a sense of loss, and gratitude.

                    Peace to all.

                    James

For those that knew him. Did he live on the Greek or Turkish side of Nicosia? My wife and I were on the Turkish side last year and it is a beautiful place. He surely lived in a paradise.
