Japanese samplers

Japanese weavers/dyers who supplied the kimono industry also made samplers.

Can we assume that providing examples of designs that could be produced was the primary reason why things Japanese samplers were produced?

I believe so.
I can provide additional pictures of examples.
I also own several naga-jubans (under-kimonos) made from these sampler bolts. So the original purpose was to demonstrate designs, but later the sample bolts themselves were then put to practical use.
