derivative designs?

My question about the origins of the presented designs (e.g., of the first blue field/offset knot rug, and the 'shikak' design) seems to have been lost in the scuffle, uh, shuffle of the other thread. I know this opens a big topic, but where might these designs have come from? Are they so derivative of other traditions that they have no individual character?
