Dear All.
I would like to suggest for discussion a synthesis of the ideas expressed in Mr. Howe's thread. Have the committee run on the lines suggested by Mr. Howe, with the modifications suggested by Mr. Price BUT . . . . Allow each memeber of the committee to enclude one item . . .his favorite . . .irrigardless of the process . . .and the curator a larger number. this would allow the idiosyncratic choices that might allow for the exceptional, the quirkly the interesting new insight for the viewers . . . to sum up . . .assume that you have a committee of 6, one curator and finaly 60 objects . . . 6 would be wild cards from the committee . . .say 4 wild cards from the curarot and 50 the committee's process-resultant choice. Best to all Richard Farber |

Hi Richard,
I suspect that this is not only an excellent idea, but that it is probably fairly close to what often happens in real life without the formal structure that you suggested. I'm sure that some of the compromising that goes on includes a dose of "I'll approve this one from your list if you approve that one from my list." Not quite the same as what you propose, but related to it. Regards, Steve Price |

Dear Steve,
the formality which I sketched out might allow a more open and pressure free selection process. It also might afford more variance in the product [the exhibitions]. there was an excellent little susani show that opened at the Islam Museum in Jerusalem today but in a scene it was very clear cut without eccentric pieces [which is fine for the venue ]. But for a major exhibition to show a sampling from collections from a large geographic area it might be more interesting to have a few quirky pieces that may be in poor condition but make an artistic or collecting statement. just image the wall with the committees personal choices . . it could be the most fun. best Richard |

Hi Richard,
I completely agree with you. Although I was not clear about it, one of the things I intended to embed in what I said is that it would be a relatively simple procedural step from what now goes on to what you propose, since something like it already is in place. Regards, Steve Price |

This is an excellent suggestion and may replace our current procedure
for introducing "wild cards" into the exhibition.
It has the additional advantage of relieving me of the task of finding my dart board. Cordially, -Jerry- |
