I know a person who's otherwise not very interested in rugs, but he does collect communist portrait rugs: Those things with Lenin or Stalin or Mao plastered all over them. Extending this a bit further there are Caucasian rugs with portraits of Tsars and Persian rugs with portraits of Shahs, etc. I can quite see things like these continuing to be made, and some people collecting them well into the next century - though they may not be 'main-line.' But history shows that even 'main-line' tastes change considerably with time.

Dear Yon,

Funny your should mention portrait rugs. John Howe forwarded to me an e-mail that he got this morning from a person in Turkmenistan who offers to make rugs with your picture on it (for a price, of course).

Might replace the wedding photo album one day.

Yon -

What Steve says is true and I'd love to put up an image but this is a market that really should not be tampered with.

Yon, the image I sent a link to had a nice Saryk "X" border.

I should say too that there's already at least a one-book literature on such pieces. I own a copy. The pieces are hilarious but that's a hopelessly culture-bound reaction from someone trapped in a rabidly capitalist society.

Regards,

R. John Howe

Hi John,

I couldn't help being struck by your referring to yourself as being someone trapped in a rabidly capitalist society. Actually I know of no capitalist society on the planet - current or past, and certainly not the one you and I live in - in which the citizens are kept in by a wall or other form of force. If we're trapped, it's only by recognizing that things are much worse if we leave it to live elsewhere. That isn't usually what keeps people in prison.
