I have several salt bags. Afshar, Uzbek, Qashquai, Baluch. But no Turkmen.

Curiously,

Dear Patrick,

I've wondered the same thing. I have seen one (but only one) Turkmen salt bag. It was inscribed with a mid-20th century date.

Regards,

Steve,

How stupid of me. I now am certain why Turkmen did not weave salt bags. They didn't need them. They kept their salt in a cardboard container with a little tin spout at the top. How do I come to this conclusion? Well, perusing that paragon of perfect information, e-bay, I came across this little tidbit of information:

The Chuval is used by Turkomen tribes as a window covering in their yurts (round houses which travelled with them).

Granted, the scenario described sounds a little like a rotund Airstream with glass sliding windows. I suspect the chuval was held up with Velcro.

Glad to be of help,

Confidently yours,

Patrick weiler
