As I was about to write up the summary for this Salon, the catalog for the up-coming Sotheby's auction (9/27/00) arrived. And what do you know? "Lot #160 A Kirman pictorial carpet, Southeast Persia, early 20th century" is absolutely infested with sheep. Groups graze in the central field. The border is filled on all four sides. One can only speculate about the genesis of such a rug, but one thing's for sure: it shows proper respect for sheep. Steve will be posting pictures shortly. Cordially, -Jerry- |

sprice@hsc.vcu.edu Dear Everyone, We don't usually discuss or show any rug that's presently for sale, and this one obviously will be until Sotheby's sale next month. It is, on the other hand, a rug clearly depicting sheep, so it's very relevant to the topic and the only image we have of a complete rug that does so. Anyway, please, no comments bearing on it's value or desirability or on Sotheby's as a seller. Steve Price |
