Dear folks -

Daniel has referred in his description of rug 1 in this salon to another and more frequently encountered Chaijli weaving design. I thought it might be useful to have an image for specific comparison.

This one comes from a July 15, 1983 catalog of Lefevre and Partners, a London rug dealer, whose knowledge of rugs seems widely respected. He describes this piece as "similar" to Schurmann's plate 76 and says it is
"attributed to the village of Chajli, which is situated in the hilly district to the South West of Shemakha." This piece is 7'9"X3'3" and is described as "First half 19th century." I don't know what Bennett thought an earlier example might be but this, if it was woven when estimated, might be a somewhat earlier one.

No technical information given. Lefevre does say the selvedges on this piece are original.
