Wendel, in his introduction wrote:
"The primary design elements are extracted from more complex forms seen on Shahsavan sumak mafrash panels and khordjin.
The following is a so-called cruciform medallion sumak khordjin, which is an even more elaborate and complex version of the design element under discussion. Note the shape of the white area serving as ground for the design within."

It seems that we don't need to look further more than to this picture to see the striking ressemblance between this Shasavan Sumakh Khorjin - 19 th century - 0.53 X 0.64 m (1'9" x 2'1") presented by Safi Habibi - Kabul Antique Rugs - in HALI 104 PAGE 36
