Dear Yon,
You wrote, "...if I wanted to make a bag with large capacity and small opening I'd make it tall and narrow...".
My ak juval is about 4' wide by 3' deep; 12 square feet. My estimate is that when it was used, the opening was generally about 1'. A 12 square foot bag with a 1 foot opening would be 12 feet tall if made as you suggest. Here's why I wouldn't make one like that:
1. If I live in a tent with vertical walls 4' high, above which they slope toward a central opening, a 12 foot tall bag will be a nuisance.
2. If I am storing grain (or potatoes, or anything else that would fit through a 1 foot opening) in it, how will I reach the stuff in a 12 foot deep bag once I've gotten the first 3 or 4 feet worth out?
3. How will I carry a bag 12' x 1', especially once it's full? Doable, but inconvenient, I suspect.
No, I think I would make a bag no deeper than 3-4 feet and as wide as I had to in order to get the capacity I need. Then I'd use a closure system that would let me open it part way when I want to take stuff out, or all the way for easy filling. Sadly, I was born too late to invent the juval!
Do you disagree?
