You are very much mistaken about the characteristics of academicians in general and scientists in particular. Many of the people who post regularly here belong to both categories, and I am one of those people.
Neither I nor most others in my profession use PUBLIC sites on the web as a forum for exchange of new ideas, for a number of reasons that I think are sound. Not the least is that the general public is likely to put great faith in poorly developed ideas that they find there. Peer review, a central element to academic scholarship, is totally impossible in public forums.
The subject of the discussion, by the way, is "how do we determine the age of a tribal rug?"
