To me the design is unsatisfactory, but the color combos look OK. The end finishes do not look like Ersari weaving to my eye. : Pointless? There is such a thing as knowledge for its own sake. That's what pure science is all about - even if in practice it may be rarely so. I, for one, am interested in knowing how things really were, with no ulterior motives. I have no expectation that any of my pieces were made in the 16th century. However, I find it fascinating to know that a bottle of old Madeira that I drank was layed down during the French revolution, or that Meissen figurines of musicians that I have were made while Mozart was a child. Similarly, it would be fascinating for me to know that some Yomud chuval was made while Vambery was visiting the tribe, or some such thing.

Dear Yon;
Just a few short comments :
1) I did NOT state in any of my posts that I am "anti"
knowledge for its own sake. On the contrary ,
I suggested earlier that there is no doubt that
we covet the older , in as good a condition as
possible , and are prepared to pay more for it.
2) I merely stated that after reading the posts of
other participants I am much less confident that there really is a reliable method of dating that we
can all agree on. As a result , it is my opinion that
we should concentrate much more on the
aesthetic values of a piece in judging it and
valuing it .
3) I think that we can all agree that the best
means available to us in dating is documentary
evidence such as provenance. Unfortunately ,
this type of evidence is missing in the case of
the vast majority of rugs (even woven-in dates
prove to be false in many cases). So , at the end
of the day we have to resort to all the old non-
scientific methods that can vary dramatically.
This fact is different from an old bottle of port
where it has been customary for centuries to
write the vintage on the label . I know very little
about Meissen porcelain , are these items dated?
If not , I wouldn't be sure that the one I just ate
from dates back to Mozart's early years. Just try
a few different experts and find out for yourself.
