Dear folks -
Marvin and Yon indicate that dealers have sometimes justified higher price by referring to the prices obtained in the Jon Thompson sale.
I have sometimes used them successfully in precisely the reverse way, arguing that it was a hyped sale and that prices were inflated. In one case I did about five years of comparative research to demonstrate this. I own a very nice six-gul Tekke torba (Pinner estimated it "before 1850) that I bought at my price on that argument.
