Dear Steve
I think that box shaped bags existed also to the north of the Kopet Dag even though may not made by Turkmens.
I cite the explanation of napramach (Usbek) and karshin (Karalkapak) as given in: Music for the eyes, Textile from the people of Central Asia, Antwerp, 1998: "Bag in the shape of a chest for storing clothing, mostly made from felt, smooth patterned fabric or knotted textile." As cat. 104 there can be seen one. Kazakhs made very fascinating chest shaped storage bags from felt (cat. 107 f). By the way, cat. 96 of the same book shows a salt bag, labelled as "Usbek (?), Latter half of 19th century" (but looks to me at least hundred years younger...)
