Dear Pilgrims,
In the previous Salon (about why we collect what we do), one of the things mentioned was that getting up close and personal with a textile collection sometimes leads to observations that need explaining, and that the process occasionally leads to new knowledge. This is a very satisfying aspect of collecting for me and, I am sure, for many others. It is probably no coincidence that rug collector societies include many scientists and physicians, people who tend to get excited about finding something new and unexpected.
I think Yon's observation and the commentary it has generated so far is a nice example of the process at work, and also illustrates how much more productive it is with many people contributing their unique perspectives and knowledge than it could possibly be when pursued in isolation.
It is also particularly gratifying to me to see such things happening on TurkoTek.
Regards,
Steve Price
