I think we may be on the verge of rediscovering the fact that there are fashions that come and go. Perhaps the "peer approval" thing that was mentioned in earlier posts is related. It is a very interesting phenomenon: people actually adopt different aesthetics from time to time. That is, not only does some particular fashion (in our case, kind of rug) become popular, but very large numbers of people who thought them uninteresting suddenly find them attractive.

Going back a few Salons, I think this fact - the ephemeral nature of fashion - has major implications on the hypothesis that aesthetic sensibility is inherited.
