: Dear folks -

: Another person whose writings are useful to examine with regard to our relationship to art is Cynthia Ozick. She is very suspicious of tendencies toward what she calls "idol-making." "The dead matter will rule the quick is the law of idolatry." Look at her non-fiction writings like her collection of essays entitled "Art and Ardor." In it she takes on as towering a figure as Harold Bloom in this regard and although her argument is a little distinctive from our conversation here (she's talking most directly about art as literature), I suspect it has its applications.

: Regards,

: R. John Howe

Dear John:
Excuse my asking, but what do you suspect those applications to be? MW
