Dear John,

Your observation that we sometimes perceive humor in art from another culture, although that is not the creator's intent, is a good one and points up one more dimension of collecting ethnic art. I mentioned that Cameroon grasslands art often has such a quality for me, and I'm virtually certain that this is not how it is/was viewed by the folks for whom it was made. Nevertheless, I respond to it in my own cultural context (how could it be otherwise?), while absorbing some elements of the foreign culture at the same time.
