There are probably as many ways for couples to deal with collecting as there are couples.
My wife, Jo Ann, and I both collect but in very different areas. Although we both have views about merits of what a good item might be in the other's collecting arena (and our tastes are different) and although there is often consultation before purchase, just as frequently there is not and our own central strategy has been not to intrude on the other person's collecting moves. We especially and self-consciously try to avoid indicating what we think the other person "should" collect in their area of interest.
