Dear Yon,
You may have misunderstood the point of my random browsing in eBay's Search utility. I certainly don't believe that there are significant numbers of truly important rugs to be found on eBay - it would be astonishing if there were any at all. The fact that a search turns up what appears to be about one every fortnight suggests hype, which is how Tom Cole (among others) referred to describing items as "important" in a general sense. This doesn't seem to me to have anything to do with whether a particular piece might be important to a particular collector, and some dealer knowing that collector's goals well enough to call attention to such a piece. That is a different use of the term "important" than the one to which Tom referred, and I and Marvin both concurred that the general tossing about of "important" and "best of type" is unusual among reputable dealers but not nearly as unusual on eBay. My eBay Search was only intended to demonstrate that point.
Regards,
Steve Price
