I guess the apparent disagreement between our positions hinges on what we mean by attending a conference. Some elements are doable over the web, just as some aspects of the exhibitions can be captured in a catalog. But, despite the fact that this exposes me as the capitalist pig that I am, some aspects of the conference really are likely to remain open only to those affluent enough to be there in person. Unfair, but then again, much of reality is like that. Unfairest of all, perhaps, is that those aspects of the conference that most of us find most valuable and pleasurable are the ones that can't be experienced in absentia.
