: Dear Friends:
: I was just looking through Schurmann's "Caucasian Rugs" and spotted one that Marvin must have missed. This is Plate 26, a Kazak Prayer Rug. It looks like (with a little imagination) a face with arms raised looking at you. The hands are shown in the spandrels and the eyes and large probiscus (hexagon) are in the mihrab. I could see how Marvin missed this since I would probably have not have thought about a human image had it not been for this Salon.
: On another matter, there is also a picture of a Kazak Triple Medallian rug in Bennett's "Oriental Rugs Volume I-Caucasian", Page 31, showing two human figures, one with three legs, in the field on the upper right hand side.
: Regards,

You are correct; I only saw the hands, but this forum has also opened my eyes a bit, and I can imagine a face. But that was my oint early last week. The images are imagined, or primitive, or stick figures, and I'm still at a loss to understand why beyond the two ideas of space and Eastern vs. Western thought. Even these two ideas don't explain "hidden images" which is a whole other topic. I don't know about all of you, but I'm having fun letting these threads expand which expands my imagination. Regards, Marvin
