This looks to me like a ruggish version of playing a record backwards to reveal a hidden message. We can't do that now that LPs are obsolete and must fall back on reversing rugs. Oddly enough, those who searched through records did so to find sacriligeous or blasphemous messages - just like hiding a human face on a prayer rug! (Now if I could only figure out what to do with this sweet potato that looks just like Mother Teresa.)
