: I think no one will quarrel with classes 1-3, although in some specific cases it may be difficult to decide whether a piece belongs to class 2 or 3 - one person's error is another one's inspiration. It is class 4, however, that is the most interesting and likely to lead to controversy. In order to establish its existence we have to show that many pieces exhibit similar irregularities that cannot be accounted for otherwise. This has been done, e.g., by Shiv Sikri in his Philadelphia ICOC paper about the 'Internal Elem' where he documents a specific pattern of irregularities in Baluch rugs. I think Steve also mentioned a similar paper from the Hamburg ICOC, and I have observed a consistent pattern of irregularities in many Turkoman pieces. By and large, I think the case for the existence of class 4 irregularities is convincing.

: Well classified Mr. Bard. In regard to #4 look at it like a musical score. Everybody knows a score of music without emphasis produces a monotonous noise. Same goes for a perfectly symmetrical regularily repeating pattern, if there isn't any emphasis it is boring. If it is true that gull represent birds and spirits and tribal emblems then their rendering as if in space would be a logical evolutionary aim. These designs were carried in memory like songs,subject to the same evolutionary forces and directions as any language, with the emphasis placed on certain lines in certain positions in the composition which yielded striking and amazing results. These results were the object of a highly critical audience and became insitutionalized. This is why one does see a yomud for instance with an asymmetric knot open left and an advanced aesthetic. She was a salor slave girl made to use their knot. I could cite examples I have cataloged for all kinds of tribal interactions. What Yon is saying in calssification #4 is the direction of future rug studies and is the road I have been travelling.
