The "arches" on many Karagashli rugs are clearly one variety of the two-headed animal (which, when inverted, have the heads projecting down and the body forming the lengthwise element of the "arch"), a motif that's fairly common in Caucasian and Persian rugs and bags. This is particularly obvious in one of the rugs posted by Daniel in this discussion thread. While Kaffel, Pinner and Franses are absolutely card-carrying experts by any reasonable standards, I think they just blew the call on this one.
