Pat Weiler wisely brought our attention to the ayatlyk or funeral rug shown as Plate 135 in Atlantic Collections (I am chagrined to have overlooked it). That piece has yet another feature: some kind of attachment on all sides except the bottom. This seems to be purely decorative and may have simply been sewn to the rug.
It's has become clear that this particular shape may be used for a variety of purposes and that slight structural deviations may occur so as to permit those varied uses.
