Have any of you studied Anasasi pottery? You might be suprised at the similarity between many of their motifs and that of Turkoman weaving - especially that of the Ersari groups. I've seen shards with broken rectangles exactly like those I've seen on rugs, as well as others which incorporate a "wave" pattern similar to the "running dog" border. (My dad says they're all variations of the yin-yang theme, which also fits in well with some of Jim's theories of negative space). In any case, I think it's interesting that these ideas appear in a completely different medium, i.e. painted pottery rather than a textile. These forms could well have been carried out of Asia; or, they may represent archetypes deep in the "collective subconscious". Either way I think it's an interesting connection.
