: Could personality explain the difference?
My thoughts are that while each weaving group or region may have followed traditional designs or symbolism for the group, the crowding may be the result of an individual weaver wanting to impart her thoughts or "weaver ID" or "weaver family signature" by imparting ADDITIONAL motiffs to that which was expected. The crowding may have occurred evolutionary and in some regions, one may attribute an older age when comparing different rugs to less crowding.
