  • Afghan Tent Band??

Hi, I wonder if anyone could please help me identify this object. I assume it's a tent band, and though I know almost nothing about carpets, a look at google gave me the impression this might be Afghan. It measures 4.3 meters, and 12 cm across the strap, and seems to have been well used. Any help with period or area of origin would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks, Steve

I certainly cant say what it is but I am wondering if it may have something to do with ........................a camel ('decoration', as opposed to a tent band)?

Whatever it is, I like it!

Thanks Phil, Yes, that makes sense. The wear to the central section might suggest movement, so there could well be an animal connection. I'll see what I can find out camel 'accessories'. Thanks again, Steve

        Hi Steve,

We need to change your user name to your first and last name, as we don't allow pseudonyms here. If you can't change it let me know and I'll make the update.

Bands such as yours are widely used throughout north and west Afghanistan as well as the border areas of adjacent nations. Some attribute this style to Kutchi nomads, but the same style is also found, and documented, in use by Turkmen. I imagine that when in use by nomads they are in dual use for securing loads to pack animals.

These bands have a plainweave section in the center where they are wrapped or looped around poles or framing, and have been pictured internal to the yurts or tents, as well as externally as a wrap to secure and decorate the exterior cover(s).

You can search our archives and find lots of discussions; you may find these two threads to be of some interest:
