  • Baharlu Borders

I bought this rug recently, which I take to be Baharlu (Khamseh) and became interested in that wacky border composition. Mine seems to be a kind of Jazz Age interpretation of a pattern which appears in a range of different geometric or curvilinear forms, including some on those Lion Rugs of Fars.

I understand the tall thin shapes may represent trees and that the main "butterfly" shape is composed of (three?) interlocking botehs. i wonder what the origin of this composition might have been and whether it is related to that common geometrical Khamseh border (bottom right in my second pic.).

Do you guys have other examples in your collections, especially old ones or any with that cane design field design?

    Hi Paul,

I haven't seen that particular border arrangement before. Interesting that you were able to find a few decent analogs - one, very nicely rendered. Maybe now that it has been pointed out I'll notice it in a few of my books. We have one wacky Bakhtiari rug with a border that is not an analog, but rather , a fellow traveller in oddity:

    Birds, trees, florettes

    Regards
    Chuck
