  • Kazakh or Kars Kazakh

Hi everybody, I am presenting one of my rugs. I am not sure about the provenance, might it be Kazakh in general, or Kars Kazakh, or…?? 130x193 cm. Wool on wool, about 1600000 knots m2. What is the name of the border design? Click image for larger version

    Hi Marc,

Not sure about the common name for that border, but I associate it especially with late 19th-century Akstafa-type "bird rugs." Approximately how old is your rug in your opinion?

    Best,

    Mikko

Hi Mikko, Thank you for your message. For me it looks similar to a Karachop (without the squares in the corner of course). The carpet is in an extremely good condition but nonetheless 'used' which can be seen at the endings (fringes), some of them have been repaired. I think the prepossessors have been veeery, veeery careful with it. I guess it should be between 60-90.

        Hi Marc,

As recently addressed in another thread, colors are very hard to produce correctly in photographs or on computer screen. The reason I asked about the age is that the colors look pretty subdued for an antique Caucasian. Cf. the similar border from my late 19th century Akstafa:

I did a quick search in my small library and found this type of border only in Akstafa rugs (Shirvan).

Oh, what a lovely piece. It seems that some Akstafa have exactly this border...hmmm..
