A little show and tell to include guess the rug type. My wife inherited this rug from her sister that we picked up last week. Her sister was a wonderful person and one of my best friends for 34 years. It will be a wonderful memory for us and it will go into our living room. Currently it’s being cleaned. The size is approximately 7 x 11 feet or approximately 2 x 3 meters. I rounded it off for the sake of clarity.

Hi Joe, This one's been up a while now and I think the responses tell the story...
My guess - and that's worth what you pay for it - is that this is a 20th century workshop rug likely from Pakistan, Turkey... ...possibly Azerbaijan, uncertain.
Elements of the borders are certainly reminiscent of the vine & cup border found on south Caucasian and northwest Persian work. But the palette is very subdued and not typical of normal Caucasian or Persian work. I have seen a couple images of rugs with similar color schemes attributed to Shirvan, in the Caucasus, so that's a possibility. But the motifs are mostly non-traditional in my view, which is common on pieces from Pakistan and Turkey. And Shirvan work that I have seen is usually pretty colorful.

Hello Chuck and thanks for your comments. The mystery rug is from Kayseri, Turkey and is called a “Bünyan”. The Bünyan is one of the top two carpets as far as workmanship and quality from Kayseri. This and the Hereke are the best quality ones made according to the experts we spoke with. We picked it up in Antalya Turkey then took it to Ankara and had it cleaned, back down to the Mediterranean a few weeks later then on to Istanbul and back to the States.
