  • Julkhyr rug (or, what)?

    Hello,

I recently received this rug. I haven't seen another quite like it.

It's about 5 x 2.5 feet in dimensions. Constructed with dark brown wefts and a mix of ivory and brown warps, with large symmetric knotted tufts, 1-1.5 inches in length. Colours look to be a mix of natural and chemical dyes.

My impression is that it's perhaps from N. Afghanistan, made by weavers of Uzbek or perhaps Taimani origin.

Does anyone have any suggestions about geographic or tribal origin? Any analogies or similar examples to share?

ID:	1129 I normally think of Julkhyr or "bear Skin" pieces as floor coverings. Not sure if this is correct. Most pieces I have seen were woven in strips and then sewn together. I have attached an example. Having said that I also have a piece about 7" by 9" that is woven as one piece.

      Thanks, Glenn.

I have the same understanding regarding julkhyr rugs. Yours definitely fit the description. That first one you posted is stunning.

I am uncertain what type of rug mine represents.

        Hi James,

For me the most baffling thing in your rug is those kelim ends. Wherever I looked at sleeping type rugs or other coarsely woven rugs with similar designs, yatak, gabbeh, Moroccan rugs, julkhyr, I never saw ends like that. The very visible knot collars of your rug seem to be a feature of julkhyr, so that supports your idea. For the rest: and .
