I thought I'd share this with you to see if anyone can attribute in what region it was woven. It also has an original retail sticker when it was purchased in Antwerp in the 70s. It measures 18 inches by 18 inches and is in very good condition with the fastening loops all intact. I look forward to you comments.

It was woven in Afghanistan perhaps a month or two before December, 1978. The geographic origin and the date the dealer acquired it are both on the label.

The date on that label is 19-4-78 i.e. April, not December.
Assuming the bag was acquired new, it was woven shortly before that date, perhaps as late as 1977.

Thanks for the correction on the date. That's what happens when my fingers start moving before my brain is started by morning coffee.

Hi Gerry,
The stacked diamonds woven in weft-substitution is a 'Baluch' mainstay. I imagine bags with this design were produced throughout the 20th century to the present with little alteration. Here is a somewhat larger example (32" x 18") made at some point in that span:

Hi
I think it's a bit of a leap of faith to make the assumption that if the bag was acquired (by whoever noted their collection details on the tag) on some specific date, that it was manufactured during the prior month.
The most we can say is that it wasn't woven any later than that.
I doubt that many pieces with this color palette and tight weave were still being made in the 1970's. I would have guessed this isn't any later than about 1950.

Hi Chuck
It's a dealer's tag with a space at the bottom where the type of rug (Afghanistan Kilim Torba) and the date the dealer acquired it (19/4/78) are entered in ink. The only thing unusual about that is that most dealers enter an inventory number instead of the acquisition date, keeping a log of the acquisition date and cost of each item separately. The piece looks brand new to me; the fringes don't appear to be frayed except, perhaps, in the pompoms at the upper corners. All of this suggests to me that the dealer bought it soon after it was woven.
Best,
Steve

Hi Egbert,
You may (or may not) know that we don't permit links to commercial sites except when there's no other way to illustrate something under discussion. The link in your post goes to a rug dealer's website, but I don't see any relevance to the discussion topic. What am I missing?
Best,
Steve
