Here is a colour photograph from 1912 of an Uzbek home with some trappings which to my failing eyesight and poor knowledge look like they contain turkmen salor guls...or not? See image 12 please.

Hi Gerard

Thanks for the link. Color photos from that era are pretty rare, and the usual monochromatic films were red-blind, which made things a bit deeptive.

That 12th photo does, indeed, include what looks like a Tekke juval with Salor guls. These were woven for export in very large numbers around 1900-1925.

Yes, I saw it this morning.

The Prokudin-Gorskii Collection is already known here on Turkotek, we have a few of its photos in our archive. It’s permanently hosted by the US Library of Congress and can be accessed and searched from here:

http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?sp=1&co=prok&st=grid

The particular image you refer, “four people seated on a carpet, in front of a backdrop of textiles” is accessible from here

http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/prok/item/prk2000002533/

and should be available in a variety of format. Right now, trying to open most of them, I receive the message “503 Service Unavailable”, but this one was still available:
